Garbage Disposals Types

If cared for properly, garbage disposals can be one of the handiest appliances to have in the kitchen.  Garbage disposals range in size by horsepower. The smallest is 1/3 horse power, and the largest for a residence is 1 horsepower. If you are thinking of replacing your garbage disposal there are a variety to choose from. Garbage disposals have grown with our technological times. Insinkerator makes a new “Evolution” model that allows you to dispose of food waste much more quietly than the older models with a more effective multiple grinding system. For those homeowners that have a septic rather than a sewer system, there is the “Evolution Septic Assist” model. This model automatically deposits a liquid microorganism that helps to decompose the food in the septic tank. Whatever model you prefer, we can provide and install the garbage disposal for you.

Garbage Disposal Repair & Tips:

With these advances, garbage disposals can still have problems. These problems can arise because of certain foods that are put down the drain. Coffee should not be put down the disposal or the kitchen sink drain. The oil from the coffee leaves a residue and can cause your kitchen sink to clog. You should not put bones, corn husks, potato skins, artichoke leaves, and other stringy type foods down the garbage disposal. Another way to prevent a clog on the garbage disposal side of the sink is to run cold water and not hot water while grinding food or disposing of grease-type substances. This will help keep the substances in a solid form and go down the drain better.

If your garbage disposal quits running, hit the red reset button. The reset button is located on the bottom of the garbage disposal. If this doesn’t work, and the garbage disposal just hums, it is jammed and the blades are locked up. There is a special tool that is used to unlock the blades of the garbage disposal, and some garbage disposals come with this “key”. Do NOT use any caustic drain opener on the garbage disposal side of the sink. It will cause damage to the disposal. A helpful tip to remember if your garbage disposal is emitting a foul odor; put a cup or two of ice cubes down the disposal with no water running, and turn it on to grind. This will help remove food particles and other build up from the sides of the garbage disposal, but if that doesn’t help, you may want to look into replacing the garbage disposal. The most important tip to remember is to use tongs and not your hand to get items out of the garbage disposal.
